Desperately Need some help
 

I am in phoenix Arizona for Naram and I run naramlive.com - I take video and pictures of the goings on at naram for those that can not attend.

anyway I can not upload mp4. first I have no practical means of cutting clips out of them and they are huge. So I want to compress them to divx.

Normally I would use tmpgenc to convert to mpeg2 and then DrDivx to convert to divx file.

For my purposes though here at Naram this won't work since tmpgenc wont let me encode the video at 1280x720 !!! ie will only do 720x480

I want the divx file to be 1280x720

Now to the problem. I tried to encode the file (mp4 right from the HD1) but for some reason DrDivx can not handle the VIDEO (codec ??) its grey but it gets the audio fine.

What codec do I need to install so DrDivx can read the mp4 directly. NOTE the video appears in the PREVIEW window just fine. its only during the actual encoding process that something goes arry and I get no video just grey.

I really need this to work with DrDivx. any other method unless its equally as easy just takes too long. (remember I fly all day and have to edit and upload before going to bed)

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe if you try to encapsulate the video en AVI using MP4Cam2AVI it will work..
I am going to do a test...and get back to you.

Back...it works:

I used MP4Cam2AVI to put the video in AVI and with the right tags...

and then I used autoGK to encode it using XviD (I prefer this tool for encoding) ... autoGK should also work with DivX.

If you get too many artifacts after the compression it may not be a bad idea to reduce the resolution a bit....it should also help with the jaggies.

I did some quick compression tests....

10% of original size gives a lot artifacts
35% of original size feels ok, keeping the 1280x720 resolution

at 1024x576 resolution I was able to compress to 20% of original size with an reasonable quality

all the test done with one pass...maybe with some tweaking and 2 pass you can get better results.

OK Tried out the program and it seems to work on. IE I get an AVI and the AVI plays (about the same size as the original) So I tossed this new avi into DrDivx and No joy still won't do the video ! (does the audio fine) its a little different I get little pixelated blotches of almost video here and there as noise but still 99% just gray screen.

Suggestions ?

Do you have the last versions of the codecs and drDivX?

maybe you want to try with autogk + DivX. DrDivX is not considered a good converting program.

But its VERY VERY easy and heavily automated

I fly for 8 hours during the day. Come back and have 2 hours to process 200+ pictures and Video before going to dinner and then Evening events. I then have about 1 hour to FInish process the days images and the Evening content before I have to be in bed by 10pm since we have to get up at 5am

I just don't have time to mess with something finicky and involved like virtual dub.

I believe I have the latest codecs (WHAT codecs do I need for sanyo mp4 files) but I am using DrDivx 1.6 - I have no upgraded because I both do not like the new version and am unable to accept the EULA for the current version of divx :-(

autogk is supposed to be very easy to use. I tried with DivX and DrDivX and I had no problems, the codec was 6.0 and DrDivX was 2.0...maybe you can reinstall your codec or try with XviD and autogk (like I said...very easy to use)

Hi you can use tmpgenc in 1280x720, at least in the release I am using (2.5). Click the Load button and choose unclock.mcf. Then click the Setting button and you can change everything.

Hmm thanks !! but one problem. I get a responce as follows

The WIndow Size is not accepted by selected MPEG-2 level.

I am assuming there is something I need to change ?? any idea what it is ?

anyone have suggestions yet on making drdivx work direct from camera mp4 and or making tmpgenc work as a go between at full resolution ?

AVISYNTH might work
 

I've never used DrDivx, but I think it can open avisynth files. Use notepad or a text editor and put in this script:

#ASYNTHER DirectShowSource
DirectShowSource(c:\sanyovideo.mp4)

save as sanyovideo.avs (or whatever, but with the .avs extention)

make sure you have avisynth installed.

I've used this script in Virtualdub Mod to create avi's. On some occasions I had to add: DirectShowSource(c:\sanyovideo.mp4, fps=29.97)

The trouble with tmpgenc is in the audio stream, try separating out the audio. I tried outputing mpeg2 at 1280x720, but it would give me the same error, so I converted the audio to .wav and it encoded, but nothing could play it back...not even media player classic. HDV is in the 720p mpeg2 format so I thought that would work, I'll try it in premiere later.

Also, someone posted that using quicktime works really well especially saving the file as "make self contained movie". I did this and it worked well for using premiere. Also, there is a plugin for tmpgenc that opens .mov files and it's free.

Actually TMPGENC has no problem with the audio on my end. it will gladly convert my videos for me but only to 720x480

quicktime is not an option too proprietary and restrictive and annoying.

mine complains about the video it says not a valid mpegII something or other and simply refuses to proceed.

DrDivx is annoying me because it converts the audio fine and it PREVIEWS and PLAYS the video just fine but when it ACTUALLY encodes the video it loses it.

I am 99% certain its a codec issue but I have no idea what the proper codec is since sanyo won't tell me and won't supply one Grrrr

I just need an EASY path to divx or xvid. something UNCOMPLICATED. at home I have all the time I want but when I am away I dont have hours to play with settings :-(

I don\'t understand why you can\'t accept the EULA, since Dr Divx went open source, it\'s the standard sourceforge one isn\'t it?

It does work for me from the raw mp4s, stays widescreen and uses the Divx 6.2.5 codec. You end up with a .divx file. Runs quite slowly though, if you have hours of video, even this may not meet your needs.

What codecs do you happen to have installed to play mp4 video ? I believe its a codec issue so I want to try having the same codecs you have installed and see if it works.
