Timecode loss

I'm having trouble with timecode.

As I log my tape, timecode is working/coming in fine.
However, when I go into batch record the timecode frame counter doesn't turn over. I just get the seconds moving and --.
This sometimes stops the recording, sometimes it doesn't. If it does record I then don't have timecode on the file - just ins and outs from the log.

If I look at the camera I'm using as a deck (canonXL1) the timecode is obviously still coming through - and I know that the AVID is recieving it because of my success in logging the tape.

What have I done wrong?

Two things before you answer
1 - yes I have the timecode button activated on the record tool
2 - this happens on several tapes, no matter where on the tape

Thanks for your help

Are you saying that it is working but you are just not seeing it?
