import speeds with externals?

Hi all! I have another question for the good ol' DVi crew. I have an external 7200 rpm firewire harddrive connected to my laptop while my laptop only has a 5400 rpm harddrive. Vegas video is on the 5400 rpm harddrive. Ok is everyone still with me. So anyway, I plug my camera into the second firewire port on the external 7200 but the software used to import the DV is on the 5400 rpm harddrive. So my question is...am I importing at 7200 rpm which the cam is plugged into; or am I only getting 5400 rpm because Vegas is on the slower 5400 rpm harddrive?
Sorry! The way I worded it prolly wasn't the best. help if you can.

I would say NEITHER - You would be limited by the FIREWIRE speed (which should still be fast enough to handle your needs). The secondary limitation would be the 7200 drive.

The 5400 drive will make no difference in your case.

so what you're saying is my 5400 rpm internal could be 10 rpm (exxagerated) and the DV would still import as fast as the firewire will? thats great

The 5400 drive should not even be part of the equation. The firewire transfer speed and 7200 drive speed will be the determining factor. Given no other factors, all of these speeds are fine.

Even if your 5400 drive was in the equation it would still be enough. A 5400rp, drive should be able to handle the DV transfer rate.
