Editing AVI from Canon G9

I have a Canon G9 and Vegas 6.

The movie clip of the G9 is in avi format (30fps)

How can I go about editing the video clip? I cannot pull the AVI onto the Vegas timeline.

Aslo: What is the best way to render it of web use, like you tube?

AVI is specific to the codec that made it, so if you don't have that codec in your editor it won't know how to open the file. Two solutions: (1) I don't know what file type is native to your NLE but try converting to either DV Stream or uncompressed AVI (there are a number of freeware/shareware video conversion programs available) and see if it will work or (2) acquire the proper codec. (I believe it may be motion-jpeg, that's what the Canon S5is cameras use). Install and see if your system will then recognize the clips...

Your other question:
If you look at YouTube's site you will find a good guide to producing videos that work best on their site, I don't have a copy a hand but it is readily accessible there. Every player is a little different, you may want to output to the specs of the particular site to which you want to upload. /Battle Vaughan /miamiherald.com video team

I'm suprised you have had a problem - the avi on my Canon point-and-shoot is plain vanilla mjpeg that Premiere loads happily.

Download a (free) copy of Virtualdub and see if that opens it. If it does, look up file/information and tell us what codec is being used. You can also specific a new codec to resave to from within Virtualdub and that might let you access it in Vegas.
