Text Issues...

What program do you guys use for cool text? I have Adobe Premiere 6.5. Right now I'm just using Photoshop 7.0, but I was looking for better programs for like animated video text and stuff. Also, what do you guys use for 3D-Motion effects?

Ed Smith January 7th, 2004 11:12 AM

Define cool?

Most people tend to use the in built title designer, or as your doing photoshop. If you want to get a little bit more creative then you could use Adobe After Effects, or a 3D modeling program like 3D studio MAX.

There are other dedicated titleing software. But I can't remember any. Besides they tend to give you really cheesey text animation.

Hope this helps,

Ed

I mean like in commercials...say when it looks like a computer is typing out the letters...or maybe the letters are wavy when they're sliding in...something like that. Not necessarily "cool" fonts per se, but more cool "techniques" or effects on manipulating the text itself.

Take a look at Ulead's Cool 3D Studio. Affordable and you can do a lot more than animate text with it.

Others that are not _too_ expensive:

Inscriber Titlemotion - it's a plugin for Premiere and can be cheesy if you use standard presets. Beware - it is aimed at video (ie broadcast) output, so all titles are interlaced.

Boris Title Toolkit - easy to use cut down version of Graffiti (note that this is a number of After Effects plugins).

Boris Graffiti (or was that Grafitti?) - a powerful, vector based, titler - it often wins comparison tests with other titlers.

Almost any compositing application (After Effects, Boris Red, Combustion, Digital Fusion) - but you need more time to fine tune the results.

Julian

here, take a look at this film here:

How would you do the effects like the text flying back and stuff like that without taking FOREVER in Photoshop to create the titles and use motion to make them go back?

Julian Luttrell January 9th, 2004 12:51 PM

Ross,

there's no application with a "make cool text" button.

It takes thoughtful design, consistent use throughout the video, and a careful eye for breaking down the final effect into a number of simpler effects that can be combined.

Then build a template version, and reuse that by changing the letters and words. All (most of) your effort goes into the first one, with subsequent uses almost happening for free.

Cool text is an art form, and the cooler it looks the longer it took to do.

Regards,

Julian

Yeah that's what I was afraid of....but is there any way to manipulate the movement of the text like in that trailer I posted? Like so you don't have to do the motion on EVERY one? ........

well the best titles are made from 3D modeling programs like th 3D studio max... but if you want almost 'on the fly' ones, check out flash.
