Editing on the laptop
 

I know I have seen post on this subject before but evidently I can work the search to find the one I was looking for.
Is it possible without being cost prohibitive, to purchase a laptop that will be close to what my desktop is. I am using a self built 3.0Mhz/1.0Gb system now with the main programs being Premiere Pro, AE and Encore. Maybe I am getting lazy but it sure would be nice to sit where I want to while working on projects.
I am currently also using a Toshiba Satellite 205, 2.0Mhz/256MB laptop. Will it make a big difference to use an external HDD? More memory? Or just find it a new home and buy another one?

I'm using a laptop with a 2.8GHz pentium CPU, 1 GIG ram, 60 GIG Hard drive, 120Gig external firewire drive. Runs Vegas great!

I wonder if the programs are simular in thier use of Memory and Processor?

Did you see Mark Christiansen's article a few months back in DV Magazine "Notebook Computers for Professional Post". He tested two PC's and a Mac in an attempt to answer the question you're asking. I'm using a hyperthreaded Prostar 3.06 with liguid edition and it works great (he machine, that is, LE is another story). Expect to use an additional fan below though otherwise you will melt your desk. I came close to buying a couple other machines, including an alienware and an aviator - the only reason i didn't was that their building times were 3 - 4 weeks. Just make sure you get at least 1 g ram to take the burden off your main unit, & plenty of firewire ports.

CPU speed is usually a bit less than desktops. But everything
else is basically no problem (nice screen, much memory, large
harddisks internal or external, io options, DVD burner etc.).
So rendering will usually take a bit longer.

I have an 900 mhz laptop I edit on with Vegas (256 MB running
XP and using a 160 GB firewire drive) without much problems.
When I'm rendering I hook up the firewire drive to my desktop
system (who is setup that all the partitions mount to the same
drive letters as on my laptop -> M: MEDIA, O: OUTPUT, P: PROGRAMS)

Then I let it render away on that 2.2 GHZ AMD system with 1 GB ram.
