Hmmm... it says dual athlon is "recommended" -- does that necessarily mean it's required?

I've considered building a Linux machine -- especially if I could find the Linux equivalents of Premiere and After Effects. This is an interesting development, but doesn't sell me completely.

Do you know if Cinelerra (or any of the other, "lightweight" linux NLEs) will work with Knoppix or Phlak (running from an otherwise WinXP system)?

it'll take a lot of tweaking to work on various distributions. i think there is a link on the site to goto a user forum. but linux by itself is tweak-oriented. i think there is a way for someone to build a windows binary from thhe source code. they just have to find time to do so.

eeeeep, that sounds like a lot of work... it's possible but the safe bet if you don't feel like commiting, is to put another hard disk (or partition) in your system and dual boot Linux/winXp.

It does say that on the page but from what I gather it is not required (I've heard of folks running on a dual P3/600 with not a problem).

Actually, there are precompiled versions to be found with some looking. Aw, either they're Twiki is down or my connections sucks. But they are somewhere in here:

I doubt it's a drop-install. But there are docs for it, and they got .debs for all you Debian freaks (me)

it is a lot of work. *nix in general is no walk in the park unless you are a unix command god.

they have updated their spec with "dual operton recommended". as you know *nix can run on anything as slow as p90, and everything that runs on top of that can run. i doubt any open source software will check your minimum spec/requirements like MS windows.

cinelerra provides sources and you have compile it into your specific distro. if it doesn't work you'll have to tweak it yourself.... just like most *nix software.

Maybe it was just me, but when I tried this software out recently, it really was completely subpar for anything serious. Slow, and very buggy is what I found. Maybe I just needed a more grunty machine to hide the bugs but really It was uninstalled as fast as I could install it.

aaron, which is why it hasn't found its way to the likes of vegas and the other stars of NLE. i think the idea is awesome though, FREE =).

the thing about *nix has always been, if it has a bug, you can fix it! do it yourself type of a thing. if you can handle that then *nix is for you. that's what cinelerra is like now. but most NLE users simply don't have time for that.

Yeah, that's the problem often with this sort of software. I agree it's a great idea and the benefits of open source is that it's development is not hindered by marketting types who will restrict what goes into it so they can secure more profit in a new release.
