stablizing shaky footage in post?
 

Anyone know any good ways to stabalize footage in premiere or afx?

After Effects Professional has motion tracking abilties that are specifically used for stabilization. It is not available in the standard edition of AE, though.

There are also apps like Gooder's SteadyHand -- http://www.goodervideo.com/ -- they have a demo you can download

Don't forget 2d3's SteadyMove, for Premiere, After Effects, and Combustion. Got a copy of my own, and well, it works as advertised.

Downsides: Windows only, no demo available. There are examples on the website, but that's it. A bit of a leap of faith.

First a warning. Usually stabalizing decreases resolution. If you
can stabalize the footage while shooting that is always the
best way to go.

i was so impressed i bought the whole series last night :)

very happy.. bit iffy about the codec used.. even at full rate, if your trying to stabilize slow motion or fast pans.. don't...

it's best to stabilize rare footage then mess with everything else later...

I thought Premiere Pro (7) has this built in!

You can get a plugin for VirtualDub called DeShaker that's pretty good - and its free. http://biphome.spray.se/gunnart/video/deshaker.htm

I think the AfterEffects pro motion tracking is easier to use, but I'm not sure if budget issues come in to play here. If so, might try this one out - nothing to lose.

After Effects doesn't reduce the quality of the video but the sides of the frame move around as much as necessary to hold the reference point still. So if it is a great deal of motion I have to correct, I just mask the frame. But usually the frame motion is slight and is hidden by the overscan of the television sets.

The other thing the tracker can do that is neat is track a moving object that you want to remove. Like an airplane. You track it and at the same time tell AE to copy that section of the sky but from a time when the airplane isn't there and paste it over the image of the airplane. Really works well. It's sort of like the rubber stamp tool in Photoshop.
