16:9 Help Please

Hi,

I shot my footage with a canon xl1 in 16:9 mode since originally it was to be used for other purposes...but now i've been told the final will be on a vhs tape....so here's my dilema:

I'm editing with premiere 6.02 and I was wondering what to do so my final to tape export won't look squished...can anybody help me find a solution?

Thanks in advance

Hi

I believe the only solution is to crop & blow up your frames, exactly which method you'd use I'll leave to others.
You will of course lose the sides, You may just want to leave it as it is, many films are broadcast widescreen.

Your footage will look good on a 16:9 tv. But if you want to play it on an ordinary 4:3 tv, you have to sqeeze it vertically. Croping is no good. Instead, get Adobe after effects or Avid xpress dv. In the aplication, change the frame size from 100% vertical to 75%, then render it. You will then have 16:9 letterboxed, instead of 16:9 anamorphic. I do it this way. My editing takes place in Premiere 6.0, and for the final output I use adobe after effects or avid xpress dv.

Good luck,

Regards,

Erik

You can just start a 4:3 project in Premiere and import the 16:9
footage. Then select maintain aspect ratio and Premiere will
automatically letterbox it.
