'compress drive to save disk space' when cutting?

Can you use the 'compress drive to save disk space' option in the case of external firewire harddrives (Matrox 250GB) when video editing - or would this create problems, i.e. would previews, edits/renders not play properly, or as smoothly..

Thanks

If this is possible I would *NOT* do this. It can definitely create
problems (you will most probably need a software suite installed
to READ such a drive) and will slow everything down A LOT. You
can probably not even capture to such a drive without dropping
frames.

But most important of all. It will NOT gain you ANY extra diskspace
because DV is not (very) compressable. Avoid such things at all
costs. Harddisks are relative cheap these days, so get another
one if you really need the extra space.

Keep in mind that a 250 GB drive will already hold nearly 20 hours
of DV footage!
