80 gig USB Pocket Drive!!

Okay. I was in Staples looking at USB pocket drives and the maximum storage that was in the store was 512 megs. Now, that's alot, but I wanted more. So, I go home and look on their website and find a Sony USB Gigavault pocket drive with 80 gigs! You heard me. It is only 380.00 too. There is also a 40 gig drive for only 299.00. I can't believe this. Can you imagine the amount of compressed video that you could carry in your pocket now. Not to mention native DV and other media files and documents.

Would it be possible to use these as video drives for NLE? What kind of transfer does USB 2.0 have? Storage and portability is my main interest but this drive is plenty big enough to store native .avi files. You could store about 8 hours of native DV on one of these. I can't wait to see how fast data transfer is, at least cut and paste.

Instead of a client saying can I see your reel, it's going to be can I see your drive.

Not fast enough in my experience. Very erratic in speed with the only drive I tried (WD 120 Gig with 2.0)

I'm just going to use whatever I get for portable storage of video.

Well damn. It's not as small as I thought according to the pictures and it runs on an internal rechargeable battery. I wonder what happens when that battery gets low and if it is solid state or has a platter. It is still a good, small, high capacity drive though. Here is better info such as pictures and specs at this link.
