New LaCie Firewire drive giving me problems
 

I just ordered a LaCie 80GB firewire/USB/SCSI drive for media storage, and am having problems installing it. When I plug it in, a prompt comes up asking me to insert my Win 98 (yes, still running it) second edition CD. Problem: my CD no longer works-- it's scratched or simply doesn't feel like it. I did borrow a Win 98 CD from a friend, but it's the first edition. The computer doesn't seem to be able to locate whatever files it's looking for (drivers, I'm assuming) off of this CD, and I have no idea where they are. Can anyone help?

Darn it. . .I should read my manual first. I've solved my problem, and now this post won't let me delete itself. Chris, once again I apologize for taking up valuable web space.

Josh, maybe this is a good time to upgrade your operating system to Windows XP?

No sir! Win 98 has not yet failed me in any significant way, and I just don't see a good reason. I'm sure somehow it would cause more problems than it would fix.

If your cd is just badly surface scratched and the substrate has not been damaged you may be able to repair it. (It sounds like you may need to use it again.) There are cd repair kits available that can help mend such problems. Sorry I can't point you to one in particular but doing a Google search will probably turn up dozens.

Thanks for the advice; I will try it. I did however get the drive up and running, so my motivation for fixing the CD has dropped severely.

Do you know if it's okay to leave the drive turned on all the time?

If you can read it now I suggest you burn a backup copy
IMMEDIATELY! That is what I do. Whenever I get a important
CD (like OS and applications). The first (really first) thing I
do with it is making a 1-on-1 copy. Then I store the original
somewhere safe and use the backup to install etc. This CD
also goes in my CD maps that I take with me regurlary.

No no. The CD had nothing to do with it. I had to set a few things in the device manager, and then format the drive.
