If I were to just dedicate my computer to NLE would it help?
 

I have had issues with my 6.5 Adobe prem crashing on me while rendering video. I was wondering if I built a computer that was just for that program and I used nothing else on it, would it speed up my processing time and also cause less crashes? I have a pent 4 3.2 gig processor with 2 gig of ram. windows XP pro is my operating system

Well the less you run there's always less chance of something going wrong, but I woudn't really bother with it Maybe you need to start from scratch to clean stuff out but I wouldn't dedicate a whole machine to editing. I used to have a dedicated machine, and used another for email and other things, but in the end I merged them. Haven't had a problem at all.

I use Vegas, and in the past had nothing but problems with premiere - so who knows, maybe it's premiered fault or mixing it with too many other apps causes the issue.

If you're having hardware problems, that can explain why Premiere 6.5 is crashing. You can test this by running prime95's "torture test".

Follow the instructions for stress testing. Test for however long it takes Premiere to crash.

2- Try patching Premiere 6.5 if you haven't done so already.

I have resorted to building PC's for specific applications before and it helped out a lot. BUT... if you have a hardware problem it won't change. Make sure all of your components are compatible and have the appropriate drivers and run hardware and memory tests to make sure it's all good.

I have so many PC's because that's what I did. I built one for Maya, another for Cakewalk Pro Audio and another for video. The fourth was for software testing and web surfing. And that doesn't even include my Mac collection.

i ran premiere 6.5 for years, on several different computers, never had problems crashing it.

but it does crap out for my neighbor when he's trying to render mpeg2 files out of it, using the mainconcept encoder that came with premiere... he also runs xp, which did work fine for me on the brief occasions that i used it with premiere.

I also have run 6.5 for several years and it does tend to crap out on me occasionally. What I have found works best so far with no failures is to date (1 year now) is as follows:

- fresh install of 6.5
- use the system tweaks over at videoguys.com
- run tweaknow registry cleaner found free on cnet.com
- use ace utilities, to clean junk files, turn off unneccessary background programs etc. found on cnet.com

I am realatively happy with 6.5 as it does the basics very well which is 99% of the type editing I do.
