Tenomichi 3D Edit uses hardware acceleration from consumer video cards (review):

yesh i know the app sux UI wise... but the promise of utilizing your video card's innards to accelerate editing is very awesome. i've been emailing avid, adobe, macromedia and vegas to rewrite their video editing applications to tap into this new feature for a year now. it looks like indie software programmers are there first. hopefully avid, adobe, macromedia and sony will revise their opinion on incoporating hardware acceleration into their vid editing prorgrams. it'd make our lives helluva lot easier.

What advantages do you see over a RT setup?

Yi Fong Yu January 28th, 2005 12:41 AM

i don't have it, but i advocate it because instead of relying on CPU 100% you're using the GPU for what its worth... VIDEO! when ATI first introduced the r300 series GPU i saw a powerpoint/video of what its videoshader can do to 3D as a visual effect and i've wanted to video apps to take advantage of that every since! sadly an indepedent software developer such as this tenomichi first develops it and using crappy UI. if the major vid editing software firms adopt this you can see productivity of video editing going waaay up! all you need is a video card that can support the newest shader from dx9c and voila, you're set to edit video in RT for a very cheap price. instead of buying a separate RT/hardware acceleration card you can tap into the full power of your existing high end video card. i definitely hope this is the future. plus with PCI-e there is enough bandwidth and possibility for software developers to write algoriths for the GPU/video card to write BACK to the system just as fast as the system is spitting information TO the video card. th reason for that is simple, have the video card aid in mpg2 rendering. instead of taking 8hrs to render 4hour shows you can render that in 4 hours "RT" with dozens of layers of fx OR with enough hardware power you can render a 4 hour show in 2 hours! it's all within the realms of possibility of the newer video cards. all we need are some industrious entreprenurial software developers to take video editing apps into the future. i mean, HD is coming... the faster the better.

you know liquid has been useing the gpu for extra power for sometime now...but the fact of the matter is the major bottle neck with hdv is compression and decompression of a very large image....which the gpu cannot help with

we are still far away from a software only rt (not fake preview rt) solution due to the enormous proc cycles needed...canopus has system set where you can proxy your footage to a low rez hd or hdv stream and edit in rt (with rt out put through firewire) and then substitute for final render

Liquid, After FX, Avid Xpress & Boris FX all take advantage of OpenGL. You will see more and more of this as new versions of NLEs get released. This is one of the reaasons why we recommend nVideo Quadro cards over less expensive 3D gaming cards.

robert,

i didn't say a software-only RT solution. i said video editing suites taking advantage of the GPU's powers for RT. so it's essentially writing sofware to make FULL use of GPU's power.

gary,
in terms of hardware, quadro and its 3D gaming card equivalanet are exactly the same except in driver optimization. after fx's 3D portion takes advantage of openGL, but i'm not so sure its 2D compositions take advantage of GPU's shaders.
