Digi Beta edit on Matrox

Is there any major loss in editing Digi Beta tapes by using a Matrox system compared to Avid Symphony? How big of a loss there is and will it effect the quality of the work or it doesn't matter too much?

Thanks

Hi Hamad,

It depends what Matrox system you are talking about, there are many models available?

And what codec you are using in Avid?

If you are talking about the Digisuite/ Axio range then it'll be pretty much the same, depening on what card you go for.

Beta SP I think is said to be around 50Mbits/ sec so the digisuite/ axio range captures willd be the same quality as your Beta SP tapes.

Well the Matrox system I have is RTX 100, will it do any good editing Digital Betacam tapes and exporting the final project onto Digi Beta??? Or will the resolution drop tremendously?

Well, the RTx 100 is DV25 based. So at most your captures will be 25Mbits/sec quality. But being that your tape was recorded on Beta SP (I guess also using a Betacam camera). The quality should be better than normal DV (recorded on a DV camera).

The RTx 100 is more comparable to Avid DV express than Avid Symphony systems.

Digibeta is around 50mbps, however its using a digibeta codec based on whatever manufacturers hadware ur using..

no way will u get digibeta on an RTx100.. itll fall over and teh codecs dont support it.. u can capture digibeta and yes it will look as though th efootage is "nicer" but ur downconverting to 4.1.1 as oppposed to using the native 4.2.2
a digisuite can do it no problem though
Avid definately.. if ur stuck with what u have and dont wana spend money, might be an idea to check out Liquid6... capture it as dvcpro50 to retain the 4.2.2. then export back out to tape straight back into bigibeta
