Maxtor Meltdown: Does Heavy Rendering Stress Drives?

I have had another catastrophic failure with my Maxtor 300 GB drive but this time it is drive related and fatal. The other occurance was only software related and I got my data back. Anyway, since I have been performing ALOT of rendering and compression for streaming media over the last few months, I couldn't help but suspect that this may produce stress loads on hard drives. Is this true?

Make sure the hard drive is getting good airflow for cooling. I like to mount hard drives in front of a chassis fan, so they get lots of airflow. When buying a case, I look for designs that place the hard drive cage right in front of a fan in the front of the chassis.
