Software for audio editing

I work with Premiere 6.0 and find the audio editing tools to be very lacking. Does anyone have recommendations on audio editing/mixing software? I am looking for something that provides precise control over multiple stereo tracks.

Thank you

The free Pro Tools software works pretty well if you have Win98.
Vegas Audio Le isn't bad either. It costs a bit but is reasonable.

I plan to add the Pro Tools LE package now that they have a PC version.

Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge is unbeatable. To put icing on this cake, the SoFo Noise Reduction plugin rocks.

Sonic Foundry's Vegas is great for editing/mixing audio as well.

p.s. it happens to be great at editing video too.....

Multiple stereo tracks?

Steinberg's SX program.

If Emagic was still supporting the PC world, I'd recommend their Logic program (Platinum version).

I work confidently (without the fear of major crashes) on both programs with my current computer system. For me, both programs have a tight sync between midi and audio recording.

However, if you want to be able to edit both video and lots of audio stereo (or mono) sound files, Vegas Video is great too!

Personally, I think it's just a matter of personal preference.

Good luck!
