LCD Calibration

i have a new LCD monitor, and I noticed that in a fade to white scene, instead of a smooth fade (which it was previously on my CRT monitor), it sort of jumps to white near the end of the fade. Does this mean white level is too high? I don't know how to set white level on an LCD. Anyway, I turned down white level until the fade was smooth. I'm just wondering if I did the right thing, or maybe there really was something wrong with the fade to white, and the CRT was just masking the problem before? Thanks.
