Alfred,

Get the HV20!!!!!!
It's worth it for the 24p alone.
I don't understand people's fixation with 3CCD or 3CMOS....
I also own an XL2, arguably the best 1/3" 3CCD SD camera ever made, and let me tell you the single chip HV20 blows it away.

But here is another possibility brought up in another post. I can monitor my sound with another source. We will be using a shotgun mic and boom pole. So if I find another way to monitor the sound, then I don't need a camera with a headphone, and that opens up a lot of possibilities, one of them being the Panasonic PV-GS500 which we can buy at B&H for under $700.

Not true, you still need to be able to monitor the sound reaching the camera. Consider the situation where you're boom operator is monitoring the sound at the microphone, perhaps with a little headphone amp clipped to his belt, but there's a loose connection where the cable goes into the camera. Monitoring through a headphone jack on the camera will tell you something's not working while monitoring only at the mic end of the cable you won't find out until it's too late to reshoot it. If this is a training program you need to teach your students the right way to go about it.

Can you use the HV20 without HD - just regular SD? And how is the quality with that? Can you shoot 24p without HD? And how is the Cinema Mode?
Thanks...

1. Yes.

2. Quality: good.

3. 24p without HD, no.

4. Cine mode gives you a flatter color, wider latitude, less contrasty image, that lends itself to better color grading in post.
