Audio and MD players

Many of you have said that you would use a portable MD player to record audio. How do you guys import the files from ATRAC to Wav for NLE use?

Curtis T. Stoeber June 11th, 2003 03:15 PM

We record them from the MD player to the computer via analog and save them as WAV or AIFF files and import them into the project.

So I would have to use a 3.5mm to 3.5mm and record the audio as Wav files from the sound card?

Casey Visco June 11th, 2003 06:34 PM

exactly. a stereo 3.5mm cable is all ya need...and they can usually be had for very cheap.

Alex Knappenberger June 11th, 2003 06:36 PM

There's no way to send it back to your computer digitally? That sucks.

Casey Visco June 11th, 2003 06:47 PM

digital isnt always better ;) i still use analog audio over digital any day. to each his own though.

anyway...you can do digital...depends on the mini-disc recorder. some do have digital outs...but they are harder to find and becoming more and more rare by the day.

nomad 3

I recently used the nomad3 hooked up to a sony ms907 mic for a back up to a 3 hour shoot. Well first off let me tell you it sure beat switching out the mini discs every hour, and the quality was clear, uncompressed wav...

i will have to use a field mixer though as the nomad's fake gain is on the low side, and the newly added vu meters are just about worthless...

the real joy was pluging it into to my laptop via firewire and i was editing, it took about 5 min to upload the 3 hour file...the nomad also has the abilty to do auto splits...

as a backup i highly recomend it, besides with 15gigs i can use it for work and play....

Ok. I just bought a DAT Recorder from eBay, great deal....anyway can someone please let me know if this configuration would be feasible or functional.

Wireless Mics (2) to the MIC input of a Nady 4 channel mixer and output the sound via unbalanced 1/4" Phono to RCA unbalanced to DAT Record to Digital Coaxial output to PC and then record the stream from the PC. Would this allow me to get better sound than recording the audio via MD to 3.5mm to the sound card?

Technically yes but you probably would not be able to tell the difference. They would both sound great.
