Macro question

Here's my problem:

I'm using a GL2 to shoot some stop motion animation and in order to get in close enough to my very small characters (Lego minifigs, as it happens) the camera has to be parked right in front of them, leaving me no room to light the scene or animate properly. (I did some last year with a ZR-10 but because the camera is so small it wasn't such a big deal.)

I'm considering picking up a diopter/macro lens like the ones available from Century Optics (http://www.centuryoptics.com/product...s/diopters.htm) but before I shell out I would like some advice.

- With the diopter on, would I be able to back the camera up and get basically the same image?

- Will I be sacrificing DoF because I'm essentially backing up and zooming in?

Any advice (including warnings, more questions or alternate solutions) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-j

There is no DOF change if the subject remains the same size. Close-up diopters (filters) will allow you to set the camera further from the subject, thus permitting better lighting. The diopter will allow you to maintain the same subject size.
