Replacement Power Supply Math Problem
 
I am contemplating buying a very cheap AG750, a Panasonic SVHS deck. But it does not have a power supply (part number AG-B21). I've found sellers, but they are way too high. So I am looking for a generic power supply that will work.

Trouble is; I cant find out what AMP output the AG-B21 has. I know from the manual that the deck needs 12 volts, and I've also found out (from two sources) that the AG-B21 boasts "14 watts" output. But no one sells power supplies by watts! I've seen several types of 12 volt power supplies for laptops and LCD monitors and other devices, ranging from very low 250 mA, all the way up to 5 A.

According to V x A = W, I should be looking for a power supply with about 1.16 amps. Am I doing that right? Is this math permitted? Will this work?

In other words, should I get such a power supply, or should I go ahead and get a 2 amp or a 5 amp power supply? Is there some way I can fry the unit by having too many amps?

Nope, you can't fry anything by having too many amps.

Your math is correct, a 2 amp unit should work fine with a bit of headroom to spare.

You should be able to pick up a regulated 12 volt plugtop unit for peanuts.

get a 2 amp PS. You need the headroom for startup, spikes, etc. Most manuf. specify power in RMS, not peak power, anyway. And if there are phase issues, the Power needed is even higher.
