Wide Angle Lens Question
 

Question about wide angle lenses, zoom through verses non zoom through...

I've been playing with video (can't really call it work most days!) for 7-8 years, NEVER have I used a wide angle lens. I've been doing some work lately that requires closer quarters and have decided that a wide angle is a must. What I have found is a good and fairly cheap W-A that is not zoom through, and another that is x2.5 the price of the first, that is a zoom through.

Now being the smart person that I am I can gather there is some advantage to having a zoom through W-A, and I would assume that it would be with the ability to "zoom" however a quick search of the internet, this board and a couple others, have left me wondering, what is that advantage more specifically?

Is it as the name implies? You can't zoom and keep focus with the one, and you can through the other. Is it really that simple?

BTW not that it would matter for the question, I don't think, but just to throw it out there. I'm shooting JVC HD110's edit FCP. 70% wedding/event, 30% other (and hopefully increasing, once I get this WA)!

Zoom through typically should be a multi element lens, and in theory should be better quality, bigger and heavier...

Non zoom through are typically fewer elements, smaller, and lighter. You'll get MAYBE a 50% zoom before everything tumbles out of focus...

If you're shooting HD, be sure to get decent glass (not the typical import stuff), or your image will suffer. A good WA is a nice addition, a cheap one is just a heartache of image degradation...
