Capture Video from screen

Can you guys recommend a descent program to capture video, from say You Tube or Vimeo from your screen? I bought HyperCam 2 but I am not happy with the quality.

Stelios,

Newer versions of Realplayer have an option to download the .flv file from YouTube, I believe it works with both low and high quality videos, at least on Windows - I'm not sure if there is a Mac equivalent. If I right-click a YouTube video I get a "Download to Realplayer" option. I presume you can then import the .flv into your editor if needed.

I'm not sure about Vimeo. If you register, you may be able to get a download link to the original WMV or MOV file.

For general screen capture, we use Camtasia at work, but it doesn't do a very good job capturing video in my experience.

Thanks Mike for your info. I use Windows XP and I am particularly interested in the better quality videos from Vimeo. I am a registered user of Vimeo but not all videos have the option to download them.

With vimeo, the FLV file will be stored somewhere in your Temporary Internet Files folder. Let the video buffer all the way to the end, then:

- Open the 'Tools' menu in Internet Explorer
- Select 'Internet Options'
- On the 'General' tab, look for 'Browsing history'. In this section, click 'Settings'
- In the dialog that appears, click the 'View files' button

On my PC at least, if I sort this by file type I can scroll around until I find the FLV videos. Copy and paste the file from here to your Desktop (or another folder) - you can't double-click them and run them in place.

I successfully got a copy of one of my own videos from Vimeo just now with this method.

It might even work!

To add to this thread, there's also another way to download videos from YouTube. Just go to KeepVid and enter the URL of the video you're attempting to download. Hit the 'Download' button and you'll be presented with two options: .flv (Low Quality) and .mp4 (High Quality). Right click and 'Save target as...' or 'Save link as...' on your desired format and the video should start downloading in no time.
