Anyone used globalmediapro.com for purchases?
 

Hi all. I'm looking around at selling off my XM2 and moving to a DVX100 and I found a place, here in New Zealand actually that has very good deals on them. Unfortunately, they are internet only orders and I do not like buying online from outfits I haven't had recommended to me.

I know that "Very good deals" tends to mean "We'll rip you off" but in the case of NZ in this case it *may* not be that. The street prices of the DVX100 here is NZ$10,200 which is US$6000. Yup, damned expensive! global media will do it for NZ$6250 which is more in line with US prices.

Anyway, has anyone dealt with these guys and have an opinion?

NOTE: Would have gone through a site sponsor (I've had good dealings with them) but ZGC doesn't sell Panny cams and Zotz can't get the PAL version.

B&H should ship to your country, but you could get killed on shipping, tariffs/customs, and taxes.

Thanks Glen. resellerratings don't have these guys on them which is a shame. Even though I cannot collect from their store/warehouse, they said that I can go to their office and view the camera. I guess if they rip me off, I can at least find them..;)

Regarding B+H I can't find a PAL version on their site and havn't had a reply from their sales people about whether they can get one.

I think the thing that bothers me is that they won't sell you one from their office. To my thinking, if you can walk out of their office with the unit under your arm, its pretty hard to be ripped off. Certainly for the money you'd think they would bend over backwards to get you to drop by with the money.

Then again, maybe I just don't know the laws of NZ.

That's good news, Aaron. Most companies don't want to turn down $6,000 NZD.

Ok, it looks like, after some investigation the company are selling grey market (parallel imported) goods. They aren't authorised dealers but they offer the Mack extended 2 year warrantees with their cameras.

Does anyone have an opinion on these sorts of places? I can go get the camera, and I can try it before I buy it. But still, I am hesitant - call me untrusting.

B & H has a FAQ on "grey market" goods. Basically, the manufacturing companies set up distribution monopolies in certain countries so they can extract more money from customers. They will charge more in one country than another. To get around this some retailers import "grey market" goods from another country where it's cheaper and they sell it to you for the cheaper price. Typically the warranty on that piece of equipment is not global, but you should be able to pay for repairs.

For the Mack warranty you have to ship your equipment to New Jersey for repairs. If there are good local repair shops then the Mack warranty may not be worth it considering rental and shipping costs.

You have to decide if you are saving enough to justify the risk.

Sometimes you may have to do a little digging to find out if someone is really an authorize dealer or not. When I was getting my XL-1 I asked Canon which vendors were authorized. At first they told me the vendor wasn't and then they said he was. Canon said their list wasn't always complete.
