Step Up or Step Down
What is better for lens and filters when you can't find your exact thread size. A step up ring or a step down ring? How much of a gap is too much. My ? pertains specefically to fisheye's, but use this thread to discuss all lens and filters.
I am getting a pana 953 which has a 43mm filter size. Should I get a Raynox hd3030 .3x with a 43mm to 37mm adapter ring or should I get a Raynow mx3000 .3x which I would have to buy a 43mm to 58mm adapter ring? Thanks for all the help. |
Perhaps Tom Hardwick can best answer this, as well as suggest the better Raynox for your PV-DV953. Personally, I'd go with the bigger threads, and step down to 43mm.

Stepping down is asking for problems. IMO

I meant the larger threaded adaptor ---> smaller threads on the cam. Bryan, how will this create problems?

It is a very confusing manner of naming the adapter rings. Some places call step-up rings, step down rings and vice versa. Very confusing. My understanding is the correct terminology is if the lens is 58mm filter size and you want to use a 67mm filter, you need a step down ring. If you want to put a 49mm filter on the same 58mm filter size lens, you would use a step-up ring. The 49mm filter would probably cause vignetting (darkening of the corners) and not be usable at most apertures.

That's a step up Frank. I'm agreeing with you buddy :)

Not enough coffee yet, d_mn, and I got to go out in that pouring rain soon. Another 70mm or more expected. :rolleyes.gif:
