Capturing PAL with an NTSC deck/camera

Alright, this may be a stupid question, but I haven't been able to find an answer anywhere.

Here goes - Is it possible to use an NTSC deck or camera to capture/view, via firewire, mini DV footage shot on a PAL camera?

If so, is there any difference or quality loss in picture?

Thanks!

Sorry Jaz, there is no way to use NTSC gear to view PAL video. You must use a PAL deck or camcorder to view PAL video. Hope this helps,

Which deck did you have in mind? You would have to check it's features. I don't know of any models that can, but perhaps some exist.

I don't believe there are any cams that can do this.

I've done this several times with my sony dsr 11. It automatically switches itself to PAL mode when a PAL formatted tape is inserted. You'll need a PAL compatible monitor to view the footage though. There isn't any loss in quality as far as I know.

Thanks, Corey, but can you upload PAL footage to it?

Oops, my statement above may have been a bit too bold and sweeping. Corey is absolutely right about the Sony DSR-11's ability to switch between PAL and NTSC. Just make sure you have a PAL monitor to view it!

Yes you can print PAL footage to tape... there's a switch on the back of it so you can set it to PAL and it acts just like a regular PAL deck, same thing goes for NTSC.
