NAB not offering much
 

My first time of knowing about NAB. The way people built it up, i thought there would be announcements of HDV product lines from Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Canon. Also i thougth we'd here of an XL2-HDV.

Am i missing something, or has nothing really been anounced?

Ben, I was thinking the same thing. Last year's NAB appeared to be a "Ho Hum" for prosumer announcements and this year appears to be, "Ho Hum - Part 2". The reports by Adam Burtle in the Digital Video Industry News category of this forum really covers a wide area but of more interest to users of high end equipment as opposed to us below $5K users.

Adam's reports are really great and he gets my kudos for taking the time to share comments and pics with us. Unfortunately, IMHO, the cam producers dropped the ball .... you can't report on something that is not there.

Oh well, there's always "Area 51".

Ben: you must have been mis-reading a lot of posts. Yes, people
eagerly await NAB and the product announcements they HOPE
will be featured there.

The team behind DVInfo.net has said time and time again that
nothing is sure until it is announced. We even said we didn't
think Canon would announce a succesor to the XL1S @ NAB.

To take that example. No-one knows whether it exists or if it
is called XL2, has HDV or when it will be announced / released.
Anyone that does know cannot talk about it. What you have been
reading is the HYPE and the HOPE people had of seeing an XL2
at NAB.

You should never trust someone's word on when something will
be announced or when it should be available. Wait for the
announcement itself since: it will tell you what you need to know.

I'm sorry NAB is turning out to be dissapointing. Take hype and
hope with a grain of salt!

Alot of people may be upset by the fact that the major DV camera comanies have not released HDV cams. Sure, I'm dissapointed too, but in no way can I hold anyone but myself at fault. We've tried to squah any rumours or hype about new cameras for months.
Remember, no manufacturer promised new HDV cameras, only people on the internet. This should serve as a good example as to how much faith should be put in posts that start with "I've got a good source that says..."

I'm constantly dissapointed Ferrari doesn't realease a 500hp convertible for under $40,000. Can I blame Ferrari?

I've said time and time again before NAB that HDV format camcorders are at least 12-18 months away. It takes time to tool up, cast moldings, design components and develop chipsets. I don't wish to appear too jaded but I have to shake my head at those who really thought we'd see HDV ready to ship at this show. It's far too soon. They can't just whip out new product at the drop of a hat. It takes much more than several months to create new product lines. It's an incredibly complex and time consuming process and some folks seem to have unrealistic expectations about what's involved. This stuff is a year away and that should not have been a surprise. Apologies for the apparent grumpiness.
