pre-roll for broadcast spot

Hey all, I've got a question regarding the "industry standard" for pre-roll when it's going out to broadcast. We've just completed a 30 second spot for a client, and are soon dubbing it to Beta SP for broadcast. I seem to remember from my internship that this was the order of things:

1. Slate (Client, Date, RT) - no idea how long this should appear on screen, 5 seconds?
2. 5 seconds of color bars w/ tone
3. 15 frames of black
4. 29 second spot
5. 15 frames of black

I'm assuming this is going on a digital system, but don't really have that much more info. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

5 seconds of slate is probably good, I usually just put a slate over my 30 seconds of bars/tone. Thats followed by an 8 second count with tone at 2 seconds and a very fast fade from black to the spot. I also run 30 or so seconds of black following the spot, 15 frames doesn't give them much room when editing. Might want to add your contact info in the slate in case they (folks in the edit bays) have a question.

I've always put down 30 seconds of bars and tone, followed by VT clock with all info text on it and with a blip of tone at 10 seconds. Go to black at 3 seconds, programme start at 0.
Mind you, this is UK standard, might be different across the pond ;-)

Robin.

I've done probably over 100 commercials and I've never had any complaints.

First 10 seconds of black at the head of the tape, then 30 seconds of bars and tone, 2 seconds of black, 5 seconds of slate, 2 more seconds of black, then the spot, then 10 seconds of black at the tail.

Anything shorter than 30 seconds of bars and tone can be frustrating for the "technician" dubbing the footage into the system since the tape needs to be playing while they adjust their audio levels, but thats more of a courtesy than a "standard".

I did a search for TRT and these three threads will tell you how it's done for broadcast.

Thanks Edward and Jeff, from all the varying methods I feel a bit more relaxed. Wasn't sure if there was a "standard" that I was to follow. Thanks again guys!
