camcorders in japan

are dv camcorders in japan cheaper than in europe? and which system do they use, pal or ntsc? is it possible to buy a camcorder overthere and use it in europe (volt, etc)?

thanx,
lukah

When I lived in Japan a few years ago, camera gear was not cheaper than in Europe, simply because everything is more expensive in Japan than in Europe.
Standard, cameras are NTSC there, but one can find PAL cameras, especially in tourist areas (opposite Shinjuku station). There may be a problem with voltage (chargers) since Japan is 110 V, 60Hz too.

Buying abroad is not ideal when you want warranty or other support in your own country. And customs may fine you for bringing in gear for which you have to pay duties and VAT upon importing into the EU (if that's where you are), they are especially vigilant on flights from Japan, Siingapore etc.

I think Japan is 100 VAC, not 110.

The Sony charger for my VX-2000 and PDX-10 says it operates from 100v to 240v, 50/60 hz

The Japanese tourists would rather buy back their own products in Malaysia or Singapore. They are cheaper here. No taxes for cameras and videocameras(consumer and prosumer).
The system here is PAL. Our broadcasters use DVCPRO, DVCAM, Digital Beta and of course XL1, GYDV500 and lots of DVX100.
Our power supply is 240V.
For the elderly, Malaysia always welcomes a permanent stay here and buy your own house here. You may ask our embassies nearby.
Just enjoy the lush tropical rainforest, white sandy beaches and capture the colourful multicultural events and nature.
If you love to eat, we have everything here from Chinese, Indian, Malay, Japanese, Italian and of course Western too.
