Sony HC40 VS Panasonic PV DV953 - PLEASE HELP -

Hello everyone...
Please help me make up my mind which to buy. I'm after with the video quality of a video camera. Is there a BIG difference between the Sony HC40 and the Panasonic PV DV953 in terms of video quality?
Is the $500 difference between the two worth paying of what you got in regards to the video quality of the DV953?
I'm thinking that if there is no BIG difference in video quality, I would go for the Sony HC40 and spend the $500 to a Digital Still Camera. Please give me your opinions thanks.

The PV-DV953 has been replaced by the GS400 and, with 1/4.7" CCDs, it should be the best consumer 3CCD camcorder.
