Between the Mac G5 and PC Pentium 4, which computer platform works best for video editing and for encoding for dvds?

1- This is going to turn into a Mac vs PC debate. Please use the search as there are a few discussions on this.

Both platforms can edit video well, although which is "better" is open to debate. A lot of it depends on what you want to do.

2- If you would like information/advice specific to your situation, you could provide some additional information.
A- What your budget is (in your currency). Be sure to mention if that includes the computer, NLE software, NTSC monitor, deck, etc.
B- What you want to do. What kind of video do you work on (i.e. industrial). What features are important to you (time remapping, compositing, audio tools, etc.)
C- What other relevant gear you own (i.e. if you own the DVX100, you may be interested in 24p). Do you already own a computer?


3- Another approach is to demo the NLEs you are interested in. The most popular here are:
Avid - mac, pc
Final Cut - mac
Vegas - pc
Premiere Pro 1.5- pc

Edition is interesting, you might want to try it too.

That's a question no-one can answer. Some people like Mac better,
some others like the PC platform better.

It basically boils down to what you feel most comfortable working
with and your budget and what software you need or want to
work with. DVD Studio Pro and Final Cut Pro are not available
for PC. Some Windows software is not available for the Mac etc.

merged them together and moved them to our general DV talk
forum. Please keep in mind that this board does not allow platform "wars".

The fundamental question should never be which platform is best but which platform supports the editing environment in which you want to edit? Once you have selected the editing environment (system) then the platform choice is frequently automatic.

1 Decide what you want to do with video
2 Discover which editing environment fits your requirements and budget.
3 Determine which platform or set of components (PC) best support your editing environment.
4 Spend your money
5 Enjoy
