dark footage
 

i have some footage i shot in low lighting. I need to bring the footage out birght enough to see, without bringing out the grain much.. for the most part i know this is aking for a miracle.. however does anyone know of any software that can perform this task exceptionally? Theres gotta be something out there to doctor this footage up without using your standard NLE image control.

If not.. any suggestions or techniques that will help?

That's about all you can do. Some systems, Avid for example, have pretty sophisticated color correction tools. You can fool around with the gamma curve, for example, and bring up the darker areas without overblowing the lighter areas...but it's a limited range. You go too far and you introduce grain and crap.

I have had some success using a photoshop trick in Premiere. You copy the clip, and drop the copy over the original. In the copy's properties, set it to screen, and adjust the opacity. It's a little work, but it does help.

If your footage is overlit, use multiply.

Hold on, Adam. Before you go spending money on the wrong software, can you post a couple of stills from this problem footage? Also, indicate what NLE/software you have available now, such as Final Cut Pro, After Effects, etc. An ideal still would have a small amount of white in it and some skin tone.

I am using after affects and premiere... however i mayalready have the grain reducing software that i posted above. Wouldnt hurt to give it a try.

I found out that this software:

it is built in to after effects 6.5. It works wonders in terms of removing grain from footage. Definately what i was looking for.. and right in front of my eyes the whole time.
