PAL recording of NTSC monitors
 

Hello.

I'm planning on shooting a movie w/ a PAL XL1-S. Several of the scenes have the main character sitting in a studio booth, watching other characters through two NTSC monitors. The problem is, we need to see what he's looking at by getting close-ups of the two NTSC monitors.

Will a PAL XL1-S with progressive scan have any distortion when recording video shown on an NTSC monitor? If so, is there a way to correct this, aside from swapping-in PAL monitors?

Will the resulting footage have trouble if it's later transferred to 35mm?

My best guess is the NTSC monitors will not look as good, the edit will be harder, and you'll waste some time on this scene in production and post. My first choice would be to rent a couple of PAL monitors, after that it'll be trial and error. NTSC might work with some effort and loss of quality, picture in picture might work (do the effect in post). A computer monitor might work with the variable scan feature. Anybody tried this?

I can't see how the different systems (PAL/NTSC) would make any difference when shot from a monitor since it is mainly a difference in the video harware - visually it comes out the same and the main concern should be the ClearScan (ie what herz is the monitor your shooting on...).

I can't see there would be any difference than shooting a computer monitor. Nor have I seen any problems when European tv has done documentaries/reports from the states and filmed TV screens.

i don't have much experience in such things, but my stomich says you will not have flickerless picture. recently i tried to shoot 60hz LCD screen with PAL camera, i had to reduce shutter speed down to 1/12, and still some flicker remained. higher level cameras have clearscan function, which could help, but price of such cameras goes skyhigh.
