Auditions - tips

Hey, just wondering if anyone has any tips to share for holding auditions? A producer I'm working on a show with had to cancel out of an audition we are holding, leaving me half in charge, and it ain't my thing.
Thoughts/suggestions/tips?

I know we have one or two threads in the L-X Lounge forum. (Sorry folks, this is a private area. But if anyone is genuinely interested I think I can copy some of that material to this area.)

I think I recall a few threads out here, also.

If at all possible, get the actors the sides (script) in advance of the audition. Prepared readings are a much more accurate reflection of an actor's skill than a cold reading. (And as an actor also, much preferred by actors.) If you can't get them to them in advance, as least give them some time to go over the sides before you call them in so they can make some choices about the material.

And after the actor does the reading, if you like them, give them direction to do it again differently, even if you think their interpretation was good the first time. This will give you an idea of their range and also how they respond to direction.
