non-anamorph dv

We all know that 16:9 on dv is anamorph (a squeezed 720x576, 4:3 image) but what would the image size be if it was not anamorph? 720x405 or 1024x576, or even something else?

All DV is 720x576 (PAL) or 720x480 (NTSC). The only thing that changes with anamorphic/non-anamorphic is how the display device interprets the width of the pixels.

If you want a 16:9 picture with square pixels, I believe you would have a 1024x576 picture in PAL. In fact it is what I use when I make still pictures in Photoshop or CG animations for 16:9. I always use 1024x576 as it is easier to work with square pixels on a computer. And when I import in my NLE it fits as a charm !

Ah, OK... I didn't understand your question. Benjamin is right. If you're dealing with square pixels and a 16:9 aspect ratio then the math is very simple. For an image with 576 vertical pixels: 576 x 16 / 9 = 1024. Your other example would also be correct: 405 x 16 / 9 = 720.

But you would only use these frame sizes if exporting a file to something like Quicktime for viewing on a computer monitor. For DV the display device does the stretching and the frame is always 720x576.
