Please school me on procamps

I have heard of people using procamps, but I'm not sure what they are. Doesn't it boost signal strength? What is a decent one? What are they going for? Thanks.

Anybody? I know there has to be someone who knows...

Frequently a procamp is integrated with a tme base corrector so you get two vital tools in one bag.

The procamp allows you to adjust the basic video signal with regard to amplitude and offset (measured with a waveform monitor) and saturation and tint (also called Chroma and Phase).

The objective is to take an abberant signal and force it to comply with either the NTSC specs or something else the user requires.

The TBC can regenerate the timing signals of the video waveform, a task that is necessary for analog VCRs, for example. DV playback, BTW, doesn't have the same problem as the waveform timing pulses are not recorded but are generated during playback and are therefore, much more accurate.
