How to play VOB (DVD files) from HDD in Windows 7 Windows Media Player?

I've never had a problem before with winXP and Windows Vista playing the video_ts file from the HDD of movies burned to the hard drive as VOB (DVDs). Usually windows media player does the job.

Now I'm on Windows 7 and it comes with windows media player 12 and some useless DVD player program that only plays from the DVD drive. They will not play the DVDs on the hard drive.

I've looked at plugins, I've tried the K-lite code pack, looked for DVD decoder plugins.... nothing seems to work for windows 7.

Wondering if anyone knows the solution?

I'm back to Vista now that my 7 RC has finished. I know that microsoft changed something about how Media Player uses directshow filters, but I'm pretty certain that the "ffdshow" codec allowed me to play VOBS and mpeg-2 in Media Player in windows 7. You do have to go into "video decoder configuration" -> "codecs" -> select "MPEG2" and then check "DVD Decoding".

In any case both "VLC" and "Media Player Classic Home Cinema" should have no problems playing Video TS and VOBs.

Hey, thanks. Unfortunately it didn't work (with ffdshow).

I'm not wanting to install another player just for the DVD... I actually tried the media player classic and it didn't work perfectly...

As I said I no longer run windows 7, hopefully some else can help out.

The person who wrote this tool, as I understand, is one of the developers of ffdshow, so I think it should be safe.

You have a few options. These programs work on Windows 7 64-bit:

- Mplayer Classic (download QT Alternative 1.81 - exactly this version, newer versions have no mpeg2 support). Has full DVD support with menu navigation, multiple languages etc, minus subltitles.
- VLC media player. Not fully tested.
- KMPlayer. Also has full DVD support, supports subtitles too.

If you're like me and hate to mess up Windows with installed software, KMPlayer has a 'portable' version - download and put it in a folder, run it from there, no need to install it.

I am using KMPlayer. You can drag and drop VOB files and they will play.
