Your experience with Global Workflows?

This is aimed at the professional editors out there.

I am working on an article for an industry magazine about global and remote workflows, both high tech and low tech. You know the drill, production in South America, editorial is in the U.S., VFX and CGI might be in Asia, tight deadline, need a collaborative work flow, even though everyone is in different countries. I am working on the angles below but I would welcome any suggestions, feedback, stories or experiences you have about productions you have worked on.

1. Aspera Software
2. Sohonet
3. Duplicating media assets in locations and e-mailing updated sequences back and forth
4. AVID's NAB Web Editing Technology Demo
5. iChat Theater Preview

I am wondering if you are shooting formats that take up a lot of room, like RED 4k files, is there any practical and effective method, short of FedExing drives, for uploading full res data that an entire production team can work on at the same time, share assets, share cuts and have real time interactive preview with director/producer and the post team? (editorial, VFX, audio post, color timing/correction/DI) Perhaps something with voice conferencing while viewing a cut and even markerboard capability where a director could point something on screen in real time and the post teams in different locations could see and interact? Is this too futuristic or have some of you worked in this way?

I am still setting up interview with Aspera, AVID and Sohonet and I know that at least some of this technology makes the things I am asking about possible but I would like to hear from the people on the front lines, the editors, about how you have been involved in these sorts of work flows and situations. What do you see in the future of this sort of collaboration? What do you want/need to make it work?

I would value any feedback or input or we could chat on the phone about or iChat/Skype as well?

Cheers,

Dan Brockett

Just had a great conversation with AVID, there are going to be some amazing things coming down the pike from them and from a lot of the other companies I mentioned above.

Guess everyone here mostly just works locally?
