Super 16mm lenses for RED and other S35 cameras

This isn't my area of expertise, but I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed that more and more people on the internet (mostly Ebay) are selling super16 lenses as "RED" lenses. Now, as far as I know, just because you put a PL mount on it... a super16 lens is never going to cover the Red's sensor... much less a micro 4/3 sensor (which I saw someone hawking one for yesterday).

Is there any way of getting more coverage from these lenses (depending on how they are mounted, I guess) that I don't know about? Or are these just ripoffs...?

I'd assume they'd be used on the upcoming interchangeable lens version of the 2/3" Scarlet rather than the large sensor camera, Although, you could use them on a windowed RED One at the expense of resolution.

You can use the trick of using what is basically a range extender to increase the image area. This was used to convert 16mm 20 to 1 zoom to cover 35mm, the best known example was used on Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon". I can't see any reason to do this except for specialist lenses.

They're doing variation of this with B4 mount HD lenses. HDx2 B4/PL Optical Adapter :: Specialty Optics :: Lenses & Lens Accessories :: Equipment Sales :: Abel Cine Tech.

Hey Brian, that's very interesting, didn't know that type of adapter existed! Cool!
