HDMI Capture

Good afternoon,

Before making a big investment in equipment, I have heard rumors that to capture via HDMI does not include audio, Can that be right??

Was curious about any pitfalls come with capturing with HDMI.

thank you for any information.

Re: HDMI Capture

Depends on the devices you are playing from and to. I understand that some cameras and some graphics cards only feed a video signal over hdmi. Others transmit both audio and video simultaneously, my Sony NX5 camera and Matrox MXO2 Mini being examples of equipment that does both.

Re: HDMI Capture

I cannot say much about pitfalls as I do not do HDMI capture but I can offer a couple of observations. First, if you are actually "capturing" from tape, there does not seem to be anything to gain by using HDMI rather than firewire unless you have a new computer with an HDMI port but no firewire. Second, if you are actually "feeding" rather than "capturing" --- basically using HDMI in place of SDI and taking an uncompressed HD feed off the camera sensor --- this has a very high data rate which requires a hefty RAID set-up of the kind that I've seen discussed here. The names that come immediately to mind are Harm Millaard, Steve Kalle and Randall Leong. You might see if my mentioning their names summons their presence. Otherwise, you might want to try a PM. Harm probably has some posts on this the user forums at Adobe's website. I remember reading some other posts a couple of years ago about using Blackmagic Design's Intensity Pro card for direct uncompressed feeds and there may be info about pitfalls there, as well.
