Anybody having problems with Taiyo Yuden/JVC DVD -Rs?

I've been burning TY discs almost exclusively for the past 4-5 years because they have been very reliable but the last two batches have been horrible. I recently ordered 3 packs of 100 and ended up having to return them as the failure rate was 30-40%. My supplier said they haven't had any issues but that the factory where the discs are made was damaged in last year's earthquake/Tsunami.

Has anyone else experienced any issues?

Hi Reed

Have you perhaps changed your burner??? There is a huge matrix of compatibilities between burners and disks ...I have jumped thru hoops trying to supply clients with the most compatible combination and most were a disaster. Currently I have had a zero error rate for 5 years by using LG Burners and LG 16X disks and I can burn them at 8X for video too and never ever a comeback so I stick with them. I made the foolish error of getting a deal on bulk lots last year and had to end up tossing them in the bin and redoing every single copy..they burnt 100% but then wouldn't play in certain players.

It might be worth your while to ditch that entire batch and get some from elsewhere if that brand has been working well up to now... and if you are still running the same hardware and it's in good condition... then again your faithful burner just might have worn out?? For the current cost of a new one it's worth popping in a new drive every 12 months anyway!

Chris

The duplicator I'm using has 4 Sony drives. At first I thought it might be on the blink but a stack of another brand (not generic) burned flawlessly (100 DVDs, no rejects) so I know it is not the drive. When I bought replacement discs, I bought two different major brands and both burned fine. It was a bad batch from TY.

As I write this, I am burning through my third stack of Verbatim cake boxed 50's (ordered 300 from B&H) and have had only 1 rejected disc. The TYs also had failures while burning on my computer (the duplicator is a stand-alone unit with a hard drive) so that confirmed it wasn't the duplicator.

Thanks for the info. I have some inventory of these but will need to replenish by end of summer. Is there a batch code or other way to identify the date of manufacture on the ones you have that are failing?

I have the -R White Hub Ink Jet 8X, J-DMR-WPP-SK8 sold in a 100 pack

I've heard of counterfeit products selling as genuine, creating problems exactly as you describe. Check the manufacturer's codes on the dvds to make sure yours are genuine. Scroll down the page of this link and you'll see all the manufacturer's codes. This list appears to be dated though, I don't know if an update is available.
