Video to run off CD

Any suggestions, I have to run a 25 minute documentary from a CD. DV-PAL doesn't run smoothly as you know because of the low bandwidth. So any other suggestions as far as frame size, and bitrate? audio/video

Hi Edwin

Would the client/s be watching it on a computer monitor or on an HDTV???? If it's a monitor I think I would stick with a 1280 x 720 MP4 ...Most 'puters will play an MP4 file easily and if you get fairly long video as a download nowdays it's more than often an MP4 file ... Some HDTV's play 1280x720 directly off a USB Thumb drive too so that might be an option too but if you are distributing on CD a 25 minute file should be able to squeeze onto a CD..... If it doesn't fit then you can always put it on a data DVD so computers will paly it without any issues.

Funny, I run wedding videos in MPEG2 off a DVD on my computer and they play as smooth as silk in PAL

To fit 25 minutes of video on a CD the bitrate should be no greater than 3 mbps.

If you wish to play the CD on a modern computer, the reasonable choice as Chris mentioned is to render your video as an H264 encoded .mp4 file with resolution 1280x720 and write it to a CD using the iso9660 filesystem. The CD will not be playable on any DVD player nor on most blu-ray players. Use the HD web video preset in your NLE.

If you wish to play the CD on an older computer, use the DivX format. DivX format consists of mpeg4 ASP encoded .avi files with resolution 720x576 written as data files to a CD using the iso9660 filesystem. DivX CDs are also playable on certain DivX compatible DVD players. Really old computers may not play these disks smoothly. Use the DVD preset in your NLE and then run the resulting mpeg2 file through a DivX converter.

If you wish to play the CD on a DVD player, use the SVCD format. An SVCD consists of mpeg2 encoded files with resolution 480x576 written using a special direct mode that bypasses the error correction mechanisms of a data CD. An SVCD may not be playable on some of the newest and cheapest DVD players. Use the SVCD preset in your NLE.

If you wish to play the CD on a genuine VCD player, use VCD format. A VCD will also play on many DVD players but is lower resolution than an SVCD. Very old computers will play both the VCD and SVCD formats but require special software to even read the disks. Use the VCD preset in your NLE.
