? for Old hi8 SONY evo-9720 users Audio Distortion

I find myself having to transfer some old hi8 tapes I shot yrs ago into cs5.5 (windows 7) via my intensity pro card. These hi8 tapes had PCM audio (originally shot on a Sony evw 300 camera) which was perfect sounding.

I'm using a EVO-9720 dual player/recorder to transfer the tapes. I keep getting audio distortion.
Tried even hooking to a mixer - still distorted audio. Could I be getting distorted audio due to not sending any type of sync signal into the player?

I've tried all the different switches/buttons on the 9720 for audio settings. Strange part is when I originally edited the tapes years ago, I used a 9720 with no problem. I tried both the player and recorder site to transfer with the same audio distortion.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

If I remember the audio features of this deck correctly, the outputs are super hot.

If I'm right, and If you've taken all steps to control this on the output side of the deck and the input side of the Intensity Pro, you'll have to pad them down, using something like this http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/68085-REG/Audio_Technica_AT8202_AT8202_In_Line_Attenuator.html
If this is a one-time thing, you might not want to spend $ on it - maybe a mixer you have can pad it down, or try the headphone output, etc.

Thanks for the advice. Will try it.

Looking at the back of the 9720 there is a SYNC in for the player and recorder (Currently not being used)
