I sort of asked myself the same question. I guess he thought out of sight in the boot ( trunk ) was safe enough.

That hurts...A mate of mine got his gear stolen in a similar situation, he had to move his gear from the car to the production location and he had to go 2 times, it was only 5 minutes when he got back to the car to see the trunk was open and his remaining gear was gone.
I never leave my most valuable gear (camera's) behind, have it in my backpack with me all the time when I"m shooting.

Steve Parish is a bit of a legend down here. The crims were probably after $3 worth of change in the ashtray and lucked out, not that they realise what they've got as they'll flog it to cash coverters for $100 bucks.

Well, while admittedly it seems like a foolish thing to do, if you read the article, he's already lost his business location to the recent floods, and looks to have been financially devastated by that, on the verge of losing his business, by the looks of it has lost his home, and is living with a sympathetic relative?

The global economic conditions have left a lot of people (good hard working creative ones too) "on the edge" financially, toss in a natural disaster, and a car may be "home"... that some low life scum of the earth inflicted further devastation on the poor guy because he was "vulnerable" is disgusting...

I hope perhaps the gear turns up at a pawn shop or something and he gets it back, losing the "tools" of your trade has to hurt, and that on top of everything else, I feel for the guy, rather than questioning his choices in difficult times...

Hope he is lucky and gets his stuff back.
I know it's nothing like a camera. But I had a trailer stolen. The police suggested that I keep an eye on Gumtree, Ebay and similar sites. Heyho around two months later the toe-rags put it up for sale. Hope this guy has the same luck.

in this part of the world i've read reports of some criminals in Dublin targeting pros - following them from a location and waiting for an opportunity to rob them, apparently last week a gang followed a guy from a job to a service station and when he went in to pay for his fuel the gang broke into his car and stole a pile of equipment.

I'm always paranoid about my stuff, it's not good for the nerves

That's horrible, and coming on top of losing his business to the floods. I just can't even imagine how horrible he must feel right now.
