project complete, what do you do with the project?

When your finished editing a video and the project is complete. What files do you keep? do you just delete files like preview files and save the whole project in on folder in case the client or yourself wants to change something?

Also what do you archive the completed projects on?

After the project is delivered and paid for I generally erase the project files. However, I always keep the original tapes and source files as well as the master for the DVD or blu-ray. Tapes go on a shelf; files go on a pair of USB hard disks.

I guess it depends on what kind of projects you're working on.

For me, that's mostly corporate and repeat business. I keep everything, as I frequently have to go back to it. External USB drives for long term archive, in addition to other drives for short-term backup.

This isn't 100% reliable, as hard drive lubricants and bearings do fail, eventually. But I've never had to go back to a project after 5 years

One exception; a long-term documentary begun in 2005. That is backed up on three drives right now.

Other's needs would be different, I'm sure, but it's what works for me!
