Standard def Video cleanup
 

Hi all

I have quite a lot of footage taken on analog video cameras and I would like to clean it up and put it on CD. I have FCP and Adode PP5 . Is there any recommended software or tips? I do have an analog to digital capture box and can go in firewire, but is there a better way?
And...how do I resize to use standard and hidef in the same timeline?

What kind of format was the SD video shot at or is it archived on?

Most all of it is high 8 Shot from an old Sony handycam

Assuming you won't be editing, why not just use a DVD recorder like this one ?

John,
Capturing your video over Firewire should be fine. It will be in the DV format which is digital (DV is compressed about 5:1) and should look good after "cleanup", depending on the quality of the original source.
Don't know about your NLEs, but in Vegas I can edit in an HD timeline and bring in SD footage. I right click on the media event and make sure it's properties are SD with the correct PAR (pixel aspect ratio) for SD DV, which is .9091. The clip is pillar boxed (black bars on the sides) and shows up as a 4:3 picture in a 16:9 frame. Some folks (I've seen this in wedding videos) create a "stretched" version of the clip, blur it out and place it on a track under the 4;3 clip, filling in the black bars with the de-focussed image. I'd do a short test to see if this works in your NLE of choice...can't hurt.
