Can I recover this video file?
 

I have an .mp4 file that is 3.08 GB in size. It was shot on a small handheld recorder on to an SanDisk Extreme Pro SD card and the file was given to me on a USB stick. The file has no metadata. It can not be played with any player I have tried so far. I have tried converting it and I get this mosaic screen with boxes of varying color. As far as I understand the stick was formatted for a Sony AVCHD camera and then simply inserted in to the small consumer camcorder without being reformatted. I dont recall the make of the handheld camcorder, but i think it may have been a panasonic.

Anyway that is all the information I have relevant and irrelevant.

THE BIG question....can I recover the video from this archive?

Have you been trying on Mac or PC? Try the other one.

Have you tried VLC Media Player?

Do download MediaInfo (freeware) and see if it can look into the file structure and determine what it is. If it recognizes the clip, perhaps you can change the file extension to some alternate based on what MediaInfo tells you.

Can you figure out what this file *should* be, based on the camcorder?

just found out the camcorder was a Toshiba...dont know the model yet...will know later....if this is relevant...

I don't know anything about this particular codec, but you have enough info from MediaInfo to do some research, like "play psp video on mac", or "edit psp videon on pc".

Sorry I don't have more direct help for you, but it's not unusual for consumer camcorders to have unique versions of codecs. Definitely hit the toshiba web site for players... ask the camcorder owner if it came with any software...

VLC has a support forum that's worth searching, too.
