Stutter in footage - advice?
 

Hey all,

Quick question -

The footage below was shot on my Canon XA10. See the stuttering when the car drives past? Obviously a bit of stutter is expected as I'm shooting at 1080 25p, but it seems excessive.

Anyone have any clues what could cause this? And is there any way to reduce it? I really need to use this shot!

I'm guessing that given this is a sunny day, you may have shot with a very high shutter speed.

If you shoot at low shutter speed, like 1/50, you will probably eliminate a lot of that stutter. Essentially, with a lower shutter speed, each individual frame will have motion blur that smooths out the stutter that can occur with a higher shutter speed.

Ah it's comments like yours that make me realise I don't know as much as I think about cameras :P

I was using programme mode on the camera, usually I don't dial in manual settings as I've never needed to.

Hey guys,

Just dragging this up again. I've still got this issue, and I'm trying to figure out how to solve the problem.

Is there a way to improve the stuttering in post? Maybe a way to blur the stuttering slightly? I realise that it can't be fixed, but any ideas on how to improve it would be really appreciated.

I've learnt from this experience.. I pretty much stick to 1/50 shutter now, and I haven't had any further issues :)

If you have access to Adobe After Effects, this tutorial may be of help, it describes several motion blur tools that can do what you need: How to Control Motion Blur in After Effects | No Stupid Questions with Colin Smith | Adobe TV

Note that the third tool mentioned, RSMB, is a 3rd-party extra cost plugin. I understand it works quite well but have not used it. There is a free demo that watermarks the image if you want to see if it works. http://www.revisionfx.com/products/rsmb/ According to the website the plugin is also available for a
number of other editing programs as well.

Same company makes another plugin called Twixtor, which can interpolate between frames and actually create smooth motion -- Adobe shows it making video movies from a sequence of still images, even...very effective but pretty pricey...
