What Camera To Shoot This?
 

I love the series and might want to produce something of my own, likely on a much smaller scale. The videography is a lot of the show, but so are the characters.

Does anyone know what they used to shoot this, or if you don't know, what what would it take?

Basically, you'd need a small 4K camera like the GH4, tripod, stabilizer, a quadcopter, and a underwater housing.

And skills to match! Both creative, to visualize an compose the shots, and craft, to use the tools to get them.

I think being able to envision the shot and the tools comment is well placed. I love the positive point of view of the talent and up beat music, but the shots are beautifully taken and surely not always easily captured!

Hard to believe how young this team is. If they can learn this, then probably I can too, one day.

I only saw deep dof in all shots so it doesn't necessarily mean they used dslr's but todays' dslr's could have been capable to do this. But I think they used professional bigger camera's, maybe shoulder mount, but ofcourse I could be mistaken. In Belgium there is a serie running where they each time follow a known person to his country of origin, it's documentary style and they also shoot a lot of b-roll of the places they visit and it looks just stunning, the color, the detail and then I don't even get to see it in the best way the camera is able to capture it because it's compressed for cable tv.
They also interview the person they follow and both persons are always on screen and the camera just follows them, often while they are walking and the images look very stable, almost like on a steadicam. A few times I have seen the shadow of the cameraman and can clearly see a very big shouldermount camera. I just say this that you might be surprised how many times these big professional camera's are used on series, like the one you showed.

Here is a pic of the lead cameraman. I think the unit is a panasonic, but from there it is hard to tell.

That photo makes clear a couple things:
It's not a small prosumer camcorder or dSLR (not a GH4), but a small to medium pro camcorder with lots of accessories. And maybe a shoulder mount cam as well, as Noa suggests.

Including a full steadicam rig with vest and arm - that answers some questions about the how the stabilized shots were acquired. Shooting with a full rig like that is another set of skills...

Hard to know whether the aerial shots were full helicopters shots with the gear we see in the photo, or small radio-controlled drone copters...

The picture and trailer really suggest that this is a larger scale of production than a guy with skills and a camera.

Possibly a Sony EX1 or later/successor version, and not an EX3.

They don't really tell you in their promotional information what equipment they are using, though they make it sound like a one camera shoot.

They shot the next series at least in part with a Red one. I suspect they did not start out that advanced for their original series..

I guess my interest is, as young as they are, what they have been able to accomplish and what others might do as well.

I think they put diesel in a gasoline truck because they couldn't read the designated fuel labels in the foreign language

Not sure what the unit is, as this is way out of my league, but at least it gives an idea. I wonder how you would travel with that kit!

Holy crap! Did you see the big crack in the rock under his feet? In addition to whatever camera he's got on that rig, he might consider wearing a parachute.
